Ask clients about uncategorized transactions with one link.
Import the For review list from QuickBooks Online or uncoded statement lines from Xero, tick the transactions you can't explain, and send your client a link. They answer on their phone with no login. Their reply merges straight back into your worksheet.
- Free
- No signup for you or your client
- No transaction data stored on our servers
- Works on phones
The month-end question round, without the spreadsheet ping-pong
No client portal to set up, no app for your client to install, nothing to connect to your client's books.
Starts from your export
Reads QuickBooks Online “For review” exports (Excel or CSV), Xero “Uncoded Statement Lines” CSVs and ordinary bank CSVs by their column headings. A mapping screen lets you fix anything it reads wrongly. Honest status: built to the documented layouts and tested with sample files, not yet with real exports from either product.
Questions your client understands
Your client picks from plain categories like “Materials & supplies” or “Personal”. Behind the scenes each one maps to your account, which pre-fills the answer column. Ask for a note, business vs. personal, or a receipt.
An answer page made for phones
Big buttons, one card per transaction, a progress bar, and answers saved on the device as they go, so your client can stop and come back.
Answers merge back
Your client sends a reply link (by email or text) or a small file. Paste it in and the answers land on the right transactions. Re-sent replies replace older ones; accounts you typed yourself are never overwritten.
No transaction data on our servers
The transactions travel inside the link, encrypted in your browser. The reply link doesn't contain the key. Your browser keeps it. Read how the links work, including the limits.
A worksheet to post from
Download the worksheet as CSV or a printable PDF, sorted by date like the bank feed, with each answer, note and the account to use.
How it works
Import
Export the transactions waiting for review (QuickBooks Online, Xero) and drop the files in.
Ask
Tick the transactions to ask about, adjust the category list, add a message and a due date.
Send
Copy the link or open a ready-made email draft in your own email app. About 30 transactions fit in one link; bigger requests are split automatically.
Merge & post
Paste your client's reply, review the answers, set the accounts and export the worksheet to post from.
What Cluerow doesn't do
- It doesn't connect to QuickBooks Online or Xero, or change anything in them. You post the answers yourself.
- It doesn't send email or reminders for you, and can't tell you whether a client opened a link. Drafts open in your own email app.
- It doesn't collect receipt photos. Clients can say they'll send one; they send it the way they usually do.
- Links aren't password-protected: anyone who has a link can open it. Details.
Questions
Is it free?
Yes, with no signup. The client's answer page shows a small “Powered by Cluerow” line, and the PDF worksheet has a small credit line in the footer.
Does my client need an account or an app?
No. The link opens in any current phone or computer browser. Answers are saved on their device while they work, and they send them back with one tap.
Where is my clients' data stored?
Imported transactions, answers and the keys for your links are stored in your browser (IndexedDB) on your computer. The transactions you ask about are inside the link you send, encrypted. Cluerow doesn't upload or store them on a server. Export a backup to keep a copy or move to another computer.
How secure are the links?
The data in the link is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and the part after “#” isn't sent to our server when the page loads. But the key is in the link too, so anyone who has the link can open it, including email security scanners and anyone it's forwarded to. Treat a link like an email with the same transactions. Your account names and codes are never put in it.
What if my client's email breaks the link?
Links are kept under about 1,800 characters so older Outlook versions don't cut them. If a link is cut off anyway, the page tells the client it's incomplete. Links that email scanners re-encode (“%23”) are repaired automatically. You can always send a link by text message instead.
Can I use it with other accounting software?
Usually. Any CSV or Excel file with a date, a description and an amount (or money in / money out columns) can be imported and mapped.
How do I get the answers into QuickBooks or Xero?
Work down the worksheet (sorted by date) while categorizing in the bank feed, and create bank rules for repeat payees. QuickBooks Online's bank CSV upload has no category column, so answers can't be imported automatically that way.
