How to export uncoded statement lines from Xero
Xero calls bank statement lines that haven't been reconciled yet uncoded statement lines. Xero can list them for a date range and export the list, which is the starting point for asking a client about them.
Steps
- In the Accounting menu, select Bank accounts.
- Click Uncoded Statement Lines. (Xero describes this list for users with the adviser user role.)
- Under Bank Account, choose one account or all bank accounts in the organization.
- Enter the From and To dates and choose the order.
- Click Run, then Export and choose CSV.
Xero adds a “Your Comments” column to the export so you can make notes offline. Advisers with access to several organizations can also bulk-download across organizations; import one organization's file per Cluerow worksheet.
Importing the file into Cluerow
Drop the CSV into the Import tab. Cluerow skips the title rows, reads the date, bank account, payee, description, reference and Spent/Received columns by their headings, and shows a preview. Xero exports dates in your organization's format; Cluerow decides between month/day and day/month from the dates in the file, and you can switch it if needed.
Honest status: Cluerow's Xero support follows the layout described by Xero and Xero advisers and has been tested with sample files built to that layout, not yet with a real Xero export. If your file doesn't import cleanly, the column mapping screen lets you fix it, and we'd be grateful for a note describing the column headings (no client data, please).
Coding the answers back in Xero
Use the exported Cluerow worksheet next to Xero's reconcile screen: it's sorted by date, with the client's answer and your chosen account on each line. Xero can also import pre-coded bank statements, but statement lines that already came in through a bank feed can then be duplicated, so for feed accounts it's usually safer to code the lines on the reconcile screen and create bank rules for repeat payees.
Send your client one link and get the answers back into a worksheet. Free, in your browser.
